The Office Look- Do’s And Don’ts

When you are at work it can be a difficult balance- you want to look good and feel confident, but at the same time, you don’t want to go overboard and send out the wrong message either. In order to maintain an appropriate look for the office, here are a few do’s and don’ts to help you find the right balance, so that you can be comfortable while at the same time looking suitably professional.

Do- Bold red lipstick
This might seem counter-intuitive, but this can work well when combined with neutral eyeshadow, matte skin and just a small amount of blush in order to create a look that is just right for the day to day routine.

Don’t- Show your roots
Showing roots may work for certain fashion show styles but doesn’t work in an office environment. If you are concerned about matching up but can’t afford regular visits, you can buy retouching kits from the salon that will match your regular treatments.

Do- Get a professional blow dry
If you are chasing a big promotion, want to impress a client or have an interview for a job you really want, a professional blow dry adds that little extra professional sheen to your hairstyle and look that could make the difference. While it’s important to research a company or do your homework on a client, people do remember little touches like this, so it’s worth going the extra mile.
Don’t- Match blouse with eye makeup
Instead of matching colours, use neutral colours for your eye makeup in the daytime and if you are out with co-workers or clients in the evening switch to a brighter shade.

Do- Keep your skin hydrated
You may or may not wear foundation. However, it is recommended you use some kind of primer on your skin in order to maintain hydration (for example, some brands contain chamomile or vitamins to provide an additional boost to hydrate the skin).

Don’t- Overdo the fragrance
Both men and women are guilty of this! While it is important to smell good (and bad body odour is definitely not what people want in close quarters) an excessive amount of fragrance can be very off-putting. Limit this to around two or three sprays so that you get the benefits without overpowering your co-workers.

Do- Observe the workplace
Note what other people are wearing. While a lot of places will have a dress code, it also helps to look at general patterns to see what works best, while at the same time slightly adjusting it so that you can stand out in a positive way.

Don’t- Stand out or be a clone
As with anything in life, balance is important. Don’t directly copy people’s looks exactly or conversely make too much of an effort to be self-consciously different from everyone. It is a tricky balance, but it is achievable and will send out the right message- you want to be a part of the team, but with enough individuality to stand out.
